What is Railways Exam?

Railways exam are the exams conducted by Indian Railways to recruit for various posts such as in Group D posts, NTPC, ALP, Technicians, etc. These exams are all conducted by various recruitment branches of railways, like the RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) and RRC (Railway Recruitment Cell). RRBs and RRCs release recruitment notifications from time to time. Most of these recruitments involve multiple stages like online written exam, psychometric tests, interviews, etc. Once you qualify a certain set of exams for a certain recruitment drive, you can be hired for the post for which you have been selected.

Am I eligible for Railways Exams?

Your Educational Qualification and Age form the basis of criteria on which your eligibility is judged for the Railways exam. You need to qualify following eligibility standards to apply for the RRC & RRB exams:
RRB NTPC

  1. Age Limit for RRB NTPC Exam
    Minimum Age – 18 yearsMaximum Age – 32 years

    Age Relaxation for Railways Exam
    The Age Relaxation for Railways Exam will be applicable as per Govt. norms for different categories are as follows:

    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC: 3 years
  2. RRB NTPC Educational Qualification
    1. You should be having a Degree from a recognized University or its equivalent.
    2. You should be having a Typing Proficiency in English/Hindi on a Computer is essential for JCAA/Senior Clerk-cum-Typist /Senior Time Keeper Posts.

RRB ALP & Technicians

  1. Age Limit for RRB ALP Exam
    Minimum Age – 18 yearsMaximum Age – 31 years

    Age Relaxation for Railways Exam
    The Age Relaxation for Railways Exam applicable as per Govt. norms for different categories are:

    • SC/ST: 5 years
    • OBC: 3 years
    • PwD – 10 years
  2. RRB ALP Educational Qualification
    1. Assistant Loco Pilot
      • You should have Matriculation / SSLC Plus ITI/ Course Completed Act Apprentices or Diploma/ Degree in Engineering. Refer to the detailed CEN published on the websites of RRBs for Trade/Disciplines.
    2. Technicians
      • Matriculation/ SSLC Plus ITI / Course Completed Act Apprentices or 10 + 2 with Physics and Maths or Diploma in Engineering (As Applicable). Refer to the detailed CEN Published on the websites of RRB’s for Trades/Disciplines against each of the posts.
    3. RRC Grade D
      1. Age Limit for RRC Grade D Exam 
        Minimum Age – 18 yearsMaximum Age – 33 years

        Age Relaxation for Railways Exam
        The Age Relaxation for Railways Exam will be applicable as per Govt. norms for different categories are as follows:

        • SC/ST: 5 years
        • OBC: 3 years
        • PwD – 10 years
      2. RRB ALP Educational Qualification
        • You should be 10th Pass or ITI from Institution recognised by NCVT / SCVT or equivalent or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT. OR
        • You should be 10th Pass plus National Apprenticeship (NAC) granted by NCVT or 10th Pass plus ITI from Institution recognised by NCVT / SCVT.

How can I Apply for Railways Exam?

You can apply for Railways Exam through Online mode only. To apply for RRB Exam, follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. You can register through the official website of RRB or the respective bank and click on the ‘Home Page’.
  2. You have to pay the Application fee online using Debit Card/Credit Card/Internet Banking/Cash Cards/Wallets, etc.
  3. Use a valid email ID that should be kept active till the declaration of your Railways exam results.
  4. You should keep a scanned photograph and signature ready as per requirements mentioned in the official notification.
  5. Submit the Application Form.
  6. Take out the Print Out of the Application Form for future reference.

By following these above steps, you will submit your RRB Form successfully.

How much Salary does Indian Railway Pay?

The Pay Scale varies for each post according to different grades. Let’s have a look at the Pay Scale & Salary for these posts:

  1. RRB NTPC Salary
    • Commercial Apprentice / Traffic Apprentice: – ₹ 9300 – 34800/- + GP ₹ 4200/-
    • ECRC / Goods Guard / Senior Clerk-cum-Typist / ASM / Senior Time Keeper: ₹ 5200 – 20200 + GP ₹ 2800/-
    • Traffic Assistant: ₹ 5200 – 20200 + GP ₹ 2000/-
  2. RRB ALP & Technicians Salary
    • Pay Scale: Rs. 19,900/- (Level 2 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix)
  3. RRC Group D Salary
    • Pay Scale: Rs. 18,000/- (Level 1 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix)

What is the Railways Exam Pattern & Selection Procedure?

The Railways Exam Pattern varies for different posts and the selection stages are also different. Let’s have a look at different exam patterns of various exams conducted by Railways.
RRB NTPCThe selection for RRB NTPC is based on 3 stages as follows:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT)
  2. Skill Test/Typing Test
  3. Document Verification

Note – Only candidates who will apply for the post of ASM & Traffic Assistant will have to appear for an additional Aptitude Test.

The CBT will be of the following pattern:

RRB ALPRRB ALP selection is based on 4 stages as follows:

    • There shall be negative marking for incorrect answers in First and Second Stage CBT.
    • 1/3rd of the marks allotted for each question shall be deducted for each wrong answer.
    • If you have applied for ALP and qualified in Second Stage CBT will have to appear for Computer Based Aptitude Test followed by Document Verification.
    • If you are applying for Technicians then you will be directly called for Document Verification after both the stages of CBT.
