Kabir: Mira, you are always telling me about cool animal superpowers. But today I read something super gross. Can some frogs actually throw up their whole stomachs?
Mira: Eww, right? But yes, Kabir, it is totally true! Certain types of frogs, like the American bullfrog, can perform what scientists call "gastric eversion." They literally turn their stomachs completely inside out and throw them right out of their mouths!
Kabir: Whoa! That sounds like something straight out of a scary movie. Why on earth would a frog do that to itself? Doesn't it hurt?
Mira: It sounds crazy, but it is actually a genius cleaning trick! Frogs eat all sorts of nasty things bugs with toxic shells, dirt, and sometimes poisonous chemicals from other critters. Since they cannot brush their teeth or use mouthwash like us, their stomach acts like a self-cleaning oven.
Kabir: Wow, how does that work? Does the stomach just stay hanging out?
Mira: Nope! When the stomach comes out through the mouth, it looks like a little pink bubble. The frog uses its front paws to wipe away all the dangerous bacteria, toxins, and leftover debris. It is basically doing a total interior wash!
Kabir: That is wild. But how do they get it back inside? Do they just swallow it down again like a giant noodle?
Mira: Exactly, Kabir! Once the stomach is nice and clean, the frog uses its throat muscles to swallow the whole thing back down, popping it right back into place inside its belly. Scientists say this whole gross and amazing process takes only a fraction of a second!
Kabir: Amazing! Are there other animals that can do weird things with their stomachs?
Mira: Sharks can also turn their stomachs inside out to clear out undigested bones or trash they accidentally swallowed. But frogs doing it is definitely one of the funniest and strangest sights in nature.
So, What Did We Learn Today?
- Certain frogs like the American bullfrog can push their entire stomachs out through their mouths in a process called gastric eversion.
- They use this bizarre trick to clean out toxins, harmful bacteria, and bad food they have eaten.
- After wiping their stomach clean with their front paws, they swallow it right back down into place.
- Sharks share a similar ability to clean out unwanted objects from their digestive tracts.
Kabir: Nature never stops surprising me. Next time I feel sick, I am definitely not trying that trick!
